1. The end of silent cinema with the arrival of sound (1927)

One of the greatest milestones in cinema history was the transition from silent films to sound, sparked by the success of The Jazz Singer in 1927. While this technical innovation was celebrated, the arrival of sound led to the collapse of many actors’ and directors’ careers as they failed to adapt to the new format. The shift was so drastic that entire studios had to reinvent themselves or face bankruptcy.

The move to sound cinema left thousands of silent film professionals jobless, and many stars of the era faded away due to unsuitable voices or a lack of vocal skills. Though a revolutionary technical advancement, its impact on the industry was devastating for those unable to adjust to the new era of film.

2. The tragedy on the set of The Crow (1993)

Another tragic accident occurred during the filming of The Crow when actor Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, was accidentally killed by a prop gun meant to be loaded with blanks. An error in handling the ammunition left a bullet in the barrel, triggering the tragedy during a scene.

Brandon Lee’s death sent an emotional shockwave through Hollywood and exposed serious flaws in set safety protocols. The tragedy spurred changes in how firearms are managed on film sets, but sadly, it wasn’t enough to prevent future incidents, as seen in the case of Rust.

3. The fire at the Universal Studios archives (2008)

Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry and the world’s second most prolific after Bollywood, faced a massive financial collapse in 2009 due to piracy and inadequate infrastructure. Known for its fast, low-budget productions, Nollywood saw revenues plummet as pirated DVDs flooded the market.

The collapse forced a complete rethink of distribution and content protection methods. Piracy remains a challenge across audiovisual industries, but Nollywood became a stark example of how an entire sector can be devastated without effective safeguards. Since then, it has started to recover, shifting toward digital platforms like Netflix and higher-quality film production.

5. The rise of streaming challenges Hollywood (2010)

In spring 2010, Netflix, once known for mailing DVDs, shifted boldly to online streaming. With a modest but growing catalog and original series on the horizon, it shook the audiovisual industry.
